Many southern Marylanders work at Andrews Air Force Base, the U.S. Census Bureau or at Patuxent River Naval Air Station and its related industries. If you are moving to Southern Maryland and planning to work at one of the military facilities then here are a few tips that will help you feel like less of a rookie.
Take Some Time Off:
If you can take a week off to decompress before starting your new job then do it. This will help you with the transition both physically and mentally.
Find Your Way Ahead of Time:
Take a trial run to work so you know the route ahead of time. It is never a good idea to be late to work, especially on your first day.
Nail Down The Dress Code:
Over or under dressing for the job will draw attention to yourself in a negative way. So make sure you adhere to the dress code rules. Try to keep it conservative and modest. Southern Maryland weather can vary. There are several thaws during the winter and winter is typically over with trees greening by mid-March. So it may be a good idea to check out the weather forecast to get an idea of how many layers you may need. Layers will allow you to control your comfort level in the office as well.
Take Notes:
It is a good idea to take notes in order to keep from having to ask the same questions ten times. Be considerate of the time of others and pay attention to the information that is being conveyed.
Don’t Take It Personally:
Unless you’ve joined an incredibly small organization, most people will be too busy to acknowledge that you’ve joined, much less make you feel welcome. In fact, you might find many people who are too busy to even say hi to you, until a few days later.
No matter which military facility you choose, Pax River Naval Air Station, Andrews Air Force Base, or etc., the career path is promising. The military industry is not going downhill anytime soon. Follow the above tips and you should be back on the right track in record time. Make sure you take in the scenery as well. The beautiful towns of Solomons Island and Chesapeake Beach are favorite weekend tourist resorts. Maryland International Raceway and Budds Creek Raceway near Chaptico attract many auto and motocross racing enthusiasts. So take some time to get to know the area.
