St. Mary’s County was the first county established in Maryland in 1637 and has a population of more than 105,00. Maryland’s first capital, St. Mary’s City, is now an outdoor living history museum and the area is home to 4 historic lighthouses. This southern Maryland jewel lies within a subtropical climate that is surrounded on three sides by bodies of water. St. Mary’s County was once the home of Francis Scott Key, the author of a poem that became known as The Star Spangled Banner.
Many people that visit St. Mary’s County love it so much they look to make a career change at the Naval Air Station. Patuxent River Naval Air Station is the area’s largest employer. This Naval Air Station is located on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of Patuxent River. It serves as a center for test and evaluation and systems acquisition relating to naval aviation. The military presence alone supports approximately 35,000 employees and contractors at three bases and a Coast Guard station.
St. Mary’s County is a wonderful area to visit, raise a family, or to start a new career. The friendly atmosphere and employment opportunities alone enures it’s own economic growth. So take some time to get to know the area and you will discover a 17th-century “city,” possibly climb to the top of a Potomac River lighthouse, or event get lost in a Tidewater sunset. Take time to shop and dine in historic Leonardtown or take a crab feast cruise on the Chesapeake Bay. No matter which sites you decide to take in don’t be surprised if you never want to leave.
