Is My Vehicle’s Exhaust Supposed To Smoke?

Vehicles can be a lot more maintenance than you first think. Many vehicle owners don’t realize that the owner’s manual is very important in helping you maintain your vehicle. Inside of your owners manual are recommendations of when you should service your vehicle for specific parts, and it is very important that you look and follow those recommendations. All the services that are recommended are vital for your car to remain reliable and safe for you to drive, because they keep the vehicle in the best condition possible. One of the most important services that is recommended is for your engine maintenance. If you choose to ignore these recommendations and continue to wear and tear your engine from high mileage, you may begin experiencing some issues we are going to be sharing with you below. If you do or are experiencing any of the following issues, it is extremely important that you get your vehicle into the shop to service and repair, as soon as possible.

Increased amounts of exhaust smoke

Exhaust smoke is completely normal for your vehicle up to a certain point. If you begin noticing a large increase in the smoke coming out of your exhaust, especially colored smoke, it can be a sign that there are serious problems occurring. If the smoke is black it could mean that too much gas is being burnt. If the smoke is white it could mean that your vehicles coolant is mixing with the gasoline. If the smoke is blue, it is most likely an oil leak, which is causing the oil to burn. Black smoke means that too much gasoline is being burnt up. White smoke indicates that coolant is mixing with the gasoline in the combustion chamber, and blue smoke is a sign of an oil leak that is causing oil to burn. These may seem like very minor problems, but if they are not quickly addressed, they pose very serious problems, that could potentially be life threatening.

Check engine light

When your check engine light comes on, you might disregard it, or you might have it immediately taken into the shop. This light being on could vary from a very minor problem that is very easy and affordable to fix, to a very large problem with a very large bill. Either way, the longer you wait to bring it into the shop, and have it diagnosed, the worse the problem will get. We highly recommend that if you notice this light come on, you take it to the shop as soon as possible to have diagnostics run.

Lagging performance

It is completely normal that over time your vehicle begins losing power. Vehicles aren’t meant to last forever. However, if you begin noticing that your car just isn’t performing like it used to, and it hasn’t been a long period of time, something is most obviously wrong. If your vehicle is beginning to struggle to accelerate, or is just lacking in power overall, it is a very big sign that you need to bring your car in and have it checked out.
